There is something very wrong in this country
THE demolition crew representing the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York arrived early the morning of July 28 at a sacred place in the East Village called St. Brigid’s Church. Arriving too were a dozen supporters of the closed church, bracing to bear witness to the unbearable.
Any prayers to still the hammers and crowbars went unanswered. Soon the silhouettes of workers were darkening the church windows. Soon their tools were smashing the stained and dappled glass that had accepted the gazes of congregants for well more than a century. Broken glass fell like brittle rain.
[...]Joseph Zwilling, a spokesman for the archdiocese, says that the three [preserved] windows and other items culled from St. Brigid’s are in storage on Staten Island, and might one day have use in other churches.
As for the remaining windows, he says, “They were not believed to have either historical or religious or monetary value, and so were not preserved.”
BUT how is value measured?
